This summer was filled with football at Montrose Community Trust, as we once again ran our popular summer camp. Our project officer, Kerr Waddell, writes about the energy, fun and friendship that was sparked through sport this year.
This summer, Montrose Community Trust had the privilege of running our Football Summer Camp, and what a summer it turned out to be! Although Links Park was out of action while the pitch was being re-laid, Gill Park became our home for the holidays, and it proved to be the perfect setting for a summer packed with football, fun, and friendship. Over five weeks of the seven-week holidays, our camp was buzzing with energy as young people from across Montrose came together to play, learn, and make memories. We also provided kids an option of a free lunch if they were staying over lunchtime.
One of the true highlights of the summer was the support we received from seven young volunteers who gave up their time to help. Their enthusiasm, kindness, and willingness to get stuck in made a huge impression, not only on the coaching team but also on the children who absolutely loved having them around. They were role models in every sense, showing that giving back to the community can be just as rewarding as taking part.
Every week, we were joined by players from both the Montrose FC men’s and women’s teams, who generously came along to present our Player of the Week certificates. These awards weren’t just about who scored the most goals or showed the most skill. Instead, they recognised the qualities we value most at Montrose Community Trust, listening to coaches, working hard, showing respect, and supporting teammates. Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they were recognised for their attitude and effort was a reminder that football is about so much more than the final score.
Our coaches had an absolute blast this summer. From the first whistle to the final session, they gave their all and in return, they were rewarded with the laughter, effort, and spirit of every single participant. Many of them have already said how much they miss camp and can’t wait to do it all again. This camp wasn’t just about football, it was about community, teamwork, and giving young people the chance to shine. None of it would have been possible without the support of Gill Park, the volunteers, the Montrose FC players, and of course, the amazing children and families who joined us.
We’re already looking forward to the next opportunity to bring everyone back together. Until then, thank you, Montrose, for another unforgettable summer of football.
